Subject : New Biofuel Source : You Magazine | | News : Biofuel isn’t entirely new (many countries produce it) but it’s new to South Africa. The process essentially involves adding ethanol, which can be made from various plant-based resources, including mealies, to normal petrol or diesel to provide a more environmentally friendly fuel. We’re focusing mainly on adding ethanol to petrol.Ethanol — a good source of octane (one of the main components of petrol) — is an alcohol-based fuel that can be produced by allowing starchy crops such as sugarcane to ferment then distilling the fermented matter.Any starchy or oily agricultural product can be used to manufacture ethanol (soya and sunflower seeds are also used to make bio-fuel).
