Subject : Fuels Old and New Source : You Magazine | | News : When bakkies, taxis, trucks or family cars pull into filling stations they usually fill their tanks with petrol or diesel which are generally made from natural resources such as oil and coal. But reserves of these resources won’t last forever. As oil becomes scarcer, for instance, it’s more difficult to pump it out of the ground and it becomes more expensive. The huge global demand for oil makes the industry very profitable in countries that have large natural reserves. But fuels as we know them — produced and marketed by an industry often associated with political and military conflict and fierce competition — are not environmentally friendly because they produce toxic by-products when burnt. For these and other reasons scientists years ago began looking at other fuel sources and came up with a useful alternative — biofuel. |
