Subject : New Biofuel
Source : You Magazine
News : Biofuel isn’t entirely new (many countries produce it) but it’s new to South Africa. The process essentially involves adding ethanol, which can be made from various plant-based resources, including mealies, to normal petrol or diesel to provide a more environmentally friendly fuel. We’re focusing mainly on adding ethanol to petrol.Ethanol — a good source of octane (one of the main components of petrol) — is an alcohol-based fuel that can be produced by allowing starchy crops such as sugarcane to  ....more >>

News : The substance from which SAs new mealie petrol will be made is known as bioethanol.Ethanol is 99 per cent alcohol in its purest form. The bioethanol industry is the largest economic development in the Free State since gold mining was started there. Unlike gold the supply of mealies is unlikely to be exhausted — farmers simply plant new crops to keep up the supply Brazil, the world leader in the development of biofuel, -uses sugarcane to make ethanol. In New Zealand ethanol is produced in an unus  ....more >>

Subject : Fuels Old and New
Source : You Magazine
News : When bakkies, taxis, trucks or family cars pull into filling stations they usually fill their tanks with petrol or diesel which are generally made from natural resources such as oil and coal. But reserves of these resources won’t last forever. As oil becomes scarcer, for instance, it’s more difficult to pump it out of the ground and it becomes more expensive. The huge global demand for oil makes the industry very profitable in countries that have large natural reserves. But fuels as we know them   ....more >>

Subject : Mealies SA Biofuel Choice
Source : You Magazine
News : Some countries, among them New Zealand and Brazil, have produced biofuel for same time and SA recently began to make plans todo the same. Farmers have for years wondered what to do with surplus mealies. Mealie prices declined because there was too much maize available and demand didn’t increase — in other words, too many mealies, too few buyers.Mealie farmers and other experts realised they had the opportunity to use surplus mealies to manufacture biofuel.Last year work began on the first fuel-f  ....more >>

Subject : Why biofuel is better
Source : You Magazine
News : It’s more environment-friendly Bioethanol is a much cleaner fuel than petrol and diesel because it gives off essentially harmless substances such as carbon dioxide ~ and water vapour when burnt. When petrol is burnt it gives off toxic substances — carbon monoxide, methane, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Adding just 10 per cent of biofuel to normal petrol will make a car’s engine run up to 30 per cent cleaner so theres far less air pollution.

Subject : Biofuel Economic Advantages
Source : You Magazine
News : Biofuel means a lot for our economy in terms of imports and exports. The more fuel we can produce the less money has to be spent on petrol bought overseas when there’s a shortage.Experts believe the new “mealie petrol” could provide 10 per cent of SA’S petrol needs. And it’s cheaper to produce ethanol from mealies than petrol from crude oil because oil prices are high.Economists predict biofuel will create many job opportunities:a biofuel plant can employ up to 10000 people.Small mealie farmers   ....more >>

Subject : How does a diesel engine differ from a petrol engine?
Source : You Magazine
News : A diesel engine is a compression-ignition engine; a petrol engine is a spark-ignition engine. A petrol engine takes in a mixture of petrol gas and air, compresses it and ignites, the mixture with a sparic a diesel engine takes in only air, compresses it, then injects fuel Into the highly compressed air, resulting in self-ignition. > Diesel fuel requires less refining so it’s generally cheaper than petrol. > Diesel fuel has a higher energy density than petrol. This, combined with the greater ef  ....more >>
